Heteroplasmy – a condition in which there is variety in the genome of different mitochondria within a cell i.e. cells contain thousands of mitochondria and there will therefore be small changes bin the DNA between them.

Homoplasmy – a condition in which all mitochondria within a cell exhibit exactly the same genotype (DNA)
